Case study

Ashley Banwell Gardens

Ashley Banwell Gardens is my mum's landscaping and garden care business in Betty's Bay, Western Cape. I'm telling you that up front. It's a real working business with a live website I built from scratch, launched on 21 October 2026, and I show it because I can tell you exactly why every decision was made.

Where she started

Found on someone else's page, with no website of her own.

Before this, search for Ashley Banwell Gardens and the first result was a listing on a directory site. It was a page on someone else's website, under their brand, and not a page of hers.

A listing is borrowed. Someone who hears her name from a neighbour and goes looking should land somewhere she controls, with her real work, her real hours and a way to reach her in one tap.

The game plan

Six decisions, and why I made each one.

  1. Put it in her name

The domain, ashleybanwellgardens.co.za, is registered in Ashley's own account. The code sits in my account for now, and she can be added to anything whenever she wants. If she ever wants to move it, it goes with her.

  2. Show the real work

Every photo and clip is from her own jobs, sorted by service: landscaping, garden service, plot clearing and irrigation. Before and after sliders let a customer see the difference instead of reading a claim about it.

  3. Make asking for a quote the easiest thing on the page

There is a call button on every page and a WhatsApp quote button that follows you down the site. The message is already written, so the customer only has to tap send. The site shows her hours and tells you if she is open right now.

  4. Answer the questions people really ask

The FAQ uses Ashley's own answers: how often a garden service visit happens and why it depends on the garden, what kind of irrigation she installs, and how long a job takes, including the busy season before Christmas.

  5. Make it easy for Google to understand

Every page has its own title and description, clean web addresses, a sitemap and a proper 404 page. The domain is verified in Google Search Console with the sitemap submitted, and her Google profile now links to the site.

  6. Keep it fast and honest

It's plain, fast code with no heavy platform behind it. The heavy hero video waits until the page has loaded, and phones are sent smaller photos. I left analytics off on purpose, so there is no tracking and no cookie banner.

What I built

A site that looks like the business it represents.

Every part of the site is there for a reason. Here is the home page with the choices from the game plan marked on it.

What changed

What I can say honestly, and what I won't.

  1. Ownership

    She owns her name online

She now has a website under her own name, at ashleybanwellgardens.co.za, with a domain in her own account.

  2. Enquiries

    One tap to reach her

A customer can call or message her from any page, on a phone or a computer.

  3. Speed

Fast on a phone and a laptop

On Google's own PageSpeed test on 21 October 2026, the home page scored 100 for performance on a laptop and 89 on a phone, and 100 for SEO on both. Scores vary a little between runs.

  4. Honesty

    No made up numbers

The site launched on 21 October. One business isn't enough to prove a trend. When there are real enquiries and search results worth showing, they go on this page, with the date.

  5. Next

    Real Google reviews

Her Google profile has two real five star reviews so far. The goal is to ask her past customers for more, because for local search they count for more than anything on the site itself.

"I build the foundation. I run the engine. You own the returns."
